About Sue
I am a mother of 3 and live in Santa Barbara, CA. I married the love of my life who is also an athlete (7-time Ironman). I have been competing in track and field for over 50 years. My main events are the 400m and 800m although I dabble in the 200, 1500, 300m hurdles, mile and high jump
I have always played sports my whole life starting at the parks and recreation level along with middle school, high school and collegiate (NCAA D2) level competition. I played basketball and ran track in high school at St. Genevieve HS and went on to compete in basketball and track at Los Angeles Junior College where I was All American in the 400 hurdles and the high jump. I earned an athletic scholarship to Cal State Northridge University to run track and specialized in the heptathon and high jump. I ended up as runner up at the NCAA Division 2 Championship 2 years in a row in the high jump.
At age 33, I qualified for the first-ever women's pole vault finals at the 1996 Olympic Trials Finals in Atlanta, GA. I was the only mom in the group! In 2001, I met my husband and we had 2 boys who are now 20 and 23....my daughter is 32.
In 2015, I took my daughter on a mother-daughter trip to Lyon France to compete in the WMA world championships in the high jump and I earned a silver medal....my first global medal! Leading up to these championships, I tore my hip labrum during a high jump competition 3 months before Worlds. Super stressful time given I didn't have health insurance so I wasn't able to get medical assistance.
In 2019, I attended my fist ever indoor world championships where I was able to earn a bronze medal in the W55 400m and a bronze in the W55 800m
In 2023, I had my 60th birthday during the indoor WMA championships so I was able to set the world records in the indoor W60 800m and 1500m. I went on to set 7 more world records outdoor in the 400, 800, 1500, mile, 300m hurdles, heptathlon and the 2000m steeple chase.
